Our
hands-down favorite drink of the summer
is the Cosmopolitan. Related to the Cape
Codder (see #9), this rosy cocktail is
rumored to have been created by a
community in Provincetown, MA. Made from
a potent mix of cranberry juice, vodka,
Cointreau, and lime juice, and served in
a Martini glass with a lemon twist, it's
a trendy staple. |

Several
years ago, you may not have been able to
order this minty-fresh quaff in an
ordinary bar. But thanks to the
popularity of Nuevo Latino cuisine, the
Mojito has become the it
cocktail. The Cuban import has a sweet
flavor that is reminiscent of limeade,
but with an extra kick of rum. Serve
with a stick of sugar cane and sprigs of
mint. |

Spanish
for "bleeding," this deep red punch is
the perfect adult accompaniment for
summer fiestas. Sangria is made from red
wine, fruit juices, soda water, and
liqueurs. Serve it in a big glass punch
bowl with sliced fruit of your choice
and avoid a watered-down punch by making
ice cubes from a small portion of the
drink. |

You
don't need to go to Long Island, New
York, to get this powerful concoction.
Made from all of the white liquors
(vodka, gin, white rum, tequila, and
Triple Sec), and mixed with lemon juice
and Coke, the Long Island Iced Tea is
served on the rocks in a large glass or
beer mug. It's not your ordinary iced
tea, but it might look like it. |

Like
many cocktails, the history of the Pina
Colada is muddled with more than several
names being attributed to discovering
this fabulous "strained pineapple"
drink. Nonetheless, this slushy, fruity
concoction combines the best of the
Caribbean: rum, pineapple, and coconut.
